Tips When Attending a Yoga Class in Japan

If you're planning to attend yoga classes in Japan, the best tip I can give is learn Japanese. However, it may take you months and years to do that so let's do a shortcut.

If you're a foreigner with basic to zero Japanese level, there are two things you must have to enjoy the classes.

1. Knowledge of yoga poses

If you haven't done yoga in your entire life, watch some yoga YouTube videos first. These will give you an idea of what you'll do in class. You don't need to memorize because each class varies the poses they teach. Just familiarize yourself with the poses so you won't be wondering what the heck the people are doing.

2. Good observation skills

Yoga has subtle nuances that you might miss even if you think you're familiar with the poses. I've been doing yoga before coming to Japan but I still have to observe the feet positions, hand movements and the timing for breathing. These are important things in yoga that can easily be missed if you don't observe closely.

Just remember these two things and you'll be ready to stretch yourself, flex some muscles and do yoga even in Japan.
